Name the activity first
CUIL and CUIT questions become clearer when the activity is named. An employer may need an employment identifier, while self-employment, invoicing, or business activity can raise an ARCA registration question. Write what you will do, who will pay you, and where the work occurs before requesting a number.
ANSES publishes CUIL information and ARCA publishes CUIT services. Those identifiers do not answer Canadian tax residence, Argentine tax residence, or immigration permission. Keep the identifier request separate from the work and tax review that surrounds it.
The boundary to keep clear
CUIL and CUIT serve different administrative purposes, so first identify whether the task concerns employment, an individual tax registration, or business activity. Check the current ANSES and ARCA instructions, then confirm which identifier and documents the employer, bank, or authority requires. A Canadian passport, residence status, and tax position do not automatically answer the identifier question.
Match identity and status records
Check the current service for passport, DNI, residence, address, and tax details. Use one consistent name and preserve the receipt or digital confirmation. If a bank or employer asks for a number before the public service is complete, ask that institution which evidence it accepts in the meantime.
Do not send every personal document to a platform or intermediary. Give the record required by the authority and keep a private copy. A request for CUIL or CUIT may be part of onboarding, but it does not guarantee an account, contract, or tax outcome.
Keep employer and ARCA questions distinct
Ask an employer how it will register payroll and what it needs from you. Ask ARCA how its service treats your activity and address. A bank, client, and company registry may each use a different document. Write the recipient beside each request so a correct number is not used for the wrong purpose.
If your work crosses Canada and Argentina, prepare a dated fact sheet for tax advice. Include the travel and payment history that matters. An identifier is an administrative input, not a complete cross-border analysis.
CUIL or CUIT
Ask the person or office requesting the number to name the service and the current evidence. Then compare that request with ANSES or ARCA instructions before submitting identity records.
Identifier procedures, portals, fees, and requirements can change. Reopen the official service before acting, and ask a qualified adviser about tax or employment consequences that the number cannot decide.
Use the identifier for its stated job
Once a number is issued, ask the employer, bank, or client how it will be used and what other registration remains. An identifier can open an administrative door while leaving payroll, invoicing, or tax advice unresolved.
Keep the service confirmation and the authority that issued it. If an institution asks for a different number, name the activity again instead of assuming the first request was wrong.
Connect the number to the task
Write the employer, bank, or activity connected to the identifier and keep the issuing service receipt.
If the activity changes, ask whether a new registration or tax review is needed.
When a number is requested by a business or platform, ask for the legal or administrative purpose in writing. That answer helps you decide whether ANSES, ARCA, an employer, or a tax adviser owns the next question. Avoid solving an unknown problem with extra registrations.
Name the activity again whenever an institution asks for a different registration. Record who requested the number, what it will do, and which ANSES or ARCA service produced the response.
The working file
- Passport and status record
- Employer or business details
- Current service instructions
- Banking and tax questions
Questions for the employer, client, or authority
- Name the activity
- Separate CUIL and CUIT purposes
- Use ANSES or ARCA instructions
- Keep tax advice separate
Before the arrangement changes
The right Argentine identifier depends on the activity behind the request. An employer's payroll question, self-employment, invoicing, business registration, bank onboarding, and tax service may not use the same identifier or evidence. Write who will pay, where the work occurs, who requested the number, and what the number will support. Compare the current ANSES or ARCA service with the institution's request before sharing identity records. CUIL or CUIT does not settle Canadian tax residence, Argentine tax residence, immigration permission, or contract terms; keep those reviews connected to the same dated fact pattern.
Identifier services, portals, evidence, and administrative uses can change. Confirm the current ANSES or ARCA service for the activity.

Questions worth resolving
Are CUIL and CUIT the same number?
They are separate Argentine identifiers associated with different administrative uses. Check the service relevant to your activity.
Does a CUIT decide tax residence?
No. Registration and tax residence are distinct and require advice for Canadian and Argentine facts.
